Natural Treatment For Depression - And it Doesn't Cost a Dime
Everyone wants a depression treatment. Anti-depressants are probably the most popular treatment, however there is a remedy that doesn't cost a dime.
Research has shown that exercising 30 minutes a day can help depression quicker than anti-depressants.
A study at Duke University took 156 depressed patients and put them on an exercise program. They walked quickly 30 minutes at a time, 3 times a week. After 16 weeks, the depression improved dramatically for those that exercised compared to the group that took anti-depressants and the group that took anti-depressants and exercised.
How does exercise help depression?
One, it increases serotonin in the brain which is known to make one feel better as well as sleep better.
Two, exercise releases endorphins which gives you that "feel good" feeling (often referred to as a "runners high").
Of course, a pill is much easier to take than to exercise. It's the easy way out. It is much easier to pop a pill and then sit on the couch and eat popcorn while watching a movie than to get out the mp3 player and hop on the treadmill for an hour. I am not knocking anti-depressants, however, if one chooses to take anti-depressants, he could also try to exercise for 3 or 4 months to see if the depression improves.
Considering the side effects of anti-depressants, it would make more sense to exercise. Plus, think of all the added benefits of exercising versus taking pills. One, you might lose weight, sleep better and feel better about yourself.
The side effects of anti depressants can include: weight gain, fatigue, drowsiness, constipation, insomnia, dry mouth and dizziness.
What is interesting about some of the side effects of antidepressants is that exercise helps alleviate them. Exercise helps one lose weight, increase energy, help one sleep better and helps with constipation.
